COLLECTION 003
NIP TUCK - THE PURSUIT OF "BEAUTY"
With 84% percent of plastic surgeons being men and 92% of cosmetic procedures being performed on women, it’s worth taking a critical look at the men behind the curtain. Although cultural critics often blame social media for the rapidly growing $63.4B industry, body modification and plastic surgery pre-date the age of the internet. This collection reflects on the heavy hand the patriarchy has played in women’s beauty ideals and the historical, ongoing pressure women feel to keep their youth and to look desirable to attract a mate.
Collection 003 features mythical “fountain of youth” imagery from medieval times, explorations in vanity and sexual enhancement, misogynistic product advertisements from the twentieth century, and artwork by LA-based artist Mark Verabioff.
